New Sony PSP Go
Sony has unveiled the PSP Go Determined to take a firm foothold in the handheld gaming market, a more portable, download-only device. Smaller and 43 percent lighter than the current PSP, it also boasts a slide-top screen that snaps shut like a mobile phone, hiding the controls.

The major change is the dumping of the maligned UMD disc drive for the speed
and convenience of 16GB internal flash memory. This puts the new PSP Go more in line with Apple's iPhone and the booming popularity of its Appstore, allowing users to download full games and demos over a wireless internet connection direct to their handheld.

Sony is charging you much more for much less.Sleeker, slimmer PSP design; 16GB of internal storage; expansion slot for additional memory; Blue tooth connectivity; good integration with PS3; can access multiple downloaded games without needing to keep bulky UMDs at hand; you can pause and resume game states.

The new, UMD-less PSP Go is an absolute dream for Sony. Since it lacks a way to play games purchased at retail, Sony gets to set the prices for every piece of content bought on the system. Who cares if the store down the street has a game for $5 cheaper? You can only get your games from one place; competition with discounting and used games is gone. Sony will now be selling you every game that goes into the Go's 16GB of storage, and without the ability to buy or sell used games; Sony now owns every single piece of the market with this system. And without an easy way to switch the battery for hacking purposes, piracy won't be as easy.

Lop the disc drive off Sony's PlayStation Portable and add a Mylo-inspired slide-screen gamepad, and you get the PSP's smaller, lighter, more dearly priced cousin--the trendier PSP Go. Sony has hiked the platform's price tag from $170 to $250, five-sixths the cost of a new PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 Elite, a reprogrammable gaming robot, In exchange you get nips and tucks in the weight and size, a modestly retooled grip interface, Bluetooth support, and 16GB of internal flash memory.

One of the most noticeable changes when you first pick up the Go is the size reduction -- no doubt helped by the complete removal of the UMD drive. The depth and height are only negligibly smaller than the PSP-2000, but as you can see from the image above, the width has been shrunk considerably, with the controls now tucked away via a new sliding mechanism that feels remarkably sturdy we gave it some slight prodding and it held up well to the coerced wear and tear. Its finish is a glossy black, and with it comes an insatiable appetite for remembering fingerprints, pretty much as bad as the black iPhone 3G.

The 3.8-inch screen is just a tinge smaller, but it honestly wasn't anything we really noticed until we put it directly next to a PSP-2000. One thing we did clearly discern was what seemed like sharper colors, ones that didn't have the same overly red hues as the PSP-3000. The battery's no longer removable, meaning no chance to bring a replacement for longer trips. On that note, we haven't done any rigorous battery life tests, but in our time the charge has managed to last about a day and a half doing some light gaming, about as long as our PSP-2000 would last. It's now adopted Blue tooth for syncing with headsets, and more importantly, 16GB of internal flash memory expandable with a Memory Stick Micro (M2) card.
